To the Library and Beyond! It is time to blast off into the annual Summer Reading Program! The St. Mary Parish Library offers a reading program with weekly activities designed to encourage reading in a fun, non-academic manner. Research has shown that children who participate in summer reading programs maintain their reading skills more often than those who do not read when school is out of session.
REGISTRATION:
Early registration will begin May 1st and continue throughout the summer, giving library users the opportunity to assure accounts are up to date. Registration is only allowed at one branch, though everyone is welcome to attend all programs, activities, and special performances at any branch of the St. Mary Parish Library System. Library calendars and newsletter listings of all the scheduled events will be available at each branch.
KICK-OFF DAY:
Program kick-off will be held on Monday June 3, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During these hours pop in for a crafting workshop, and top it off with a sweet treat! Kick-Off Day will be the first opportunity to check out books that will count towards the summer reading goal.
RULES:
Our goal is to increase READING. ALL Participants are required to turn in at least a minimum of 600 minutes by July 12, 2019 in order to successfully complete the program. SORRY, NO EXCEPTIONS. We encourage children and parents to set personal goals in excess of the minimum to possibly place as a top reader. Every participant may only submit minutes read on THEIR reading level. Adults or Young Adults who are reading to their children or younger siblings CANNOT count those minutes for themselves if they are participants in the Summer Reading Program. Finale ceremonies at each library will highlight achievements of all the participants. Enjoy a pizza party featuring final awards, prizes, treats and games. In order to attend you MUST receive an invitation. The only way to obtain an invite is to read and turn in the 600 minute minimum!
