1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

by | Feb 5, 2024 | Youth

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge is a Library program that encourages all families and caregivers to read at least 1,000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten. Reading to preschool-age children builds vocabulary and language skills and helps prepare them with the skills they need for kindergarten. In as little as 15 minutes a day, families can build the skills for future school and life success.

How the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program Works

  • Any child who hasn’t entered kindergarten yet, including infants, is eligible for the program.
  • Each time you read a book with your child, log the title!
  • Readers will earn rewards as they work towards reading.
  • Reward List-
    • At registration, you’ll receive a tote bag to carry all the books you’re reading!
    • Each 100-book badge you unlock, visit the library for a sticker.
    • When you get to 1,000, you’ll receive a new book to keep and a reading certificate of completion!

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a self-paced program with no end date as your child’s completion will coincide with their entry into school. You decide how often and how long you read. The key is perseverance! Celebrate milestones with us at the library as you progress and most importantly, enjoy reading with your child!
